*For puppies having diarrhea please contact a vet.
*For adult dogs having persistent diarrhea over 4 days, please contact a vet.
If your adult dog is having loose stool or is having diarrhea (looks like 2, 3, or 4 from the diagram), one of the best remedy is withholding food for a meal (typically, this means fasting for 12-24 hours). After fasting, you should give your dog a veterinary diet for gastrointestinal problems until stool is firm (this usually takes 2-4 days).
A simple at home one that we love is cooked chicken breast (alternative would be rehydrating single ingredient freeze dried chicken), a grain (rice or bread), and puree canned pumpkin (if you are buying this from a normal grocery store, make sure that you are NOT buying pumpkin pie filling).
These meals help the good bacteria in your dog’s intestine and provide antioxidants that help your dog's immune system with recovering. (They will also love it).

GRAIN TYPES
If you own a dog, you've probably experienced the unpleasantness of trying to pick up diarrhea a time or two. If you have a dog like our 60-pound goldendoodle Emi, who has an extremely sensitive stomach (I'm talking eat one blueberry equals diarrhea sensitive) you end up having to do it quite often.
Ever since Emi was a puppy, she had been a picky eater, but combine that with frequent diarrhea or vomiting, we had a lot of trouble finding food that she could eat.
We have mainly remedied her diarrhea by feeding her A Better Dog Food. I'll be quite frank, we had tried many dog food brands prior to creating A Better Dog Food because honestly, I was so exhausted from waking up every couple hours to let her out.
But every now and then, Emi would go into stealth mode on our walks and pick up something she shouldn't have. When I say stealth mode, the girl would pick up what I call an UGO (unidentified ground object) and carry it in her mouth for 3 blocks before swallowing it. We know this, because we have caught her multiple times, but every now and then, we miss it. And boy are those nights rough for Emi and I both!
