Sensitive Stomach? How to Help Your Pup's Upset Tummy

What To Do If My Dog Has Diarrhea?

Dog Stool Infographic

*For puppies having diarrhea please contact a vet.
*For adult dogs having persistent diarrhea over 4 days, please contact a vet.

If your adult dog is having loose stool or is having diarrhea (looks like 2, 3, or 4 from the diagram), one of the best remedy is withholding food for a meal (typically, this means fasting for 12-24 hours). After fasting, you should give your dog a veterinary diet for gastrointestinal problems until stool is firm (this usually takes 2-4 days).

A simple at home one that we love is cooked chicken breast (alternative would be rehydrating single ingredient freeze dried chicken), a grain (rice or bread), and puree canned pumpkin (if you are buying this from a normal grocery store, make sure that you are NOT buying pumpkin pie filling).

These meals help the good bacteria in your dog’s intestine and provide antioxidants that help your dog's immune system with recovering. (They will also love it).

GRAIN TYPES

Wild rice is the most nutritious rice and provides bountiful amount of fiber and antioxidants.
White rice provides a good source for carbohydrates (starch) and helps soothes an upset stomach. Starch gets digested when it reaches the small intestines and helps useful gut bacteria promote regular bowel movements and bulks up loose stool.
Brown rice provides a higher fiber content, but is also more difficult to digest.
PROTEIN
Chicken provides natural B3 and B6 vitamins and phosphorous and selenium minerals. It is one of the easiest to digest proteins.
FRUIT
Pumpkin is a fiber-rich food that contains vital vitamins (A, E, and C) and minerals (potassium and iron), as well as acts as a prebiotic. Pumpkin fiber absorbs water and therefore adds more form to your dog's stool.

Our Own Sensitive Stomach Dog

If you own a dog, you've probably experienced the unpleasantness of trying to pick up diarrhea a time or two. If you have a dog like our 60-pound goldendoodle Emi, who has an extremely sensitive stomach (I'm talking eat one blueberry equals diarrhea sensitive) you end up having to do it quite often.

Emi and Rice on Face

Ever since Emi was a puppy, she had been a picky eater, but combine that with frequent diarrhea or vomiting, we had a lot of trouble finding food that she could eat.

We have mainly remedied her diarrhea by feeding her A Better Dog Food. I'll be quite frank, we had tried many dog food brands prior to creating A Better Dog Food because honestly, I was so exhausted from waking up every couple hours to let her out.

But every now and then, Emi would go into stealth mode on our walks and pick up something she shouldn't have. When I say stealth mode, the girl would pick up what I call an UGO (unidentified ground object) and carry it in her mouth for 3 blocks before swallowing it. We know this, because we have caught her multiple times, but every now and then, we miss it. And boy are those nights rough for Emi and I both!

We have since learned that the best way to calm her upset stomach after her first case of diarrhea is to feed her white rice, chicken breast, and canned pumpkin. (You can just imagine, how much time I had to put in between running to the grocery store to pick up chicken breast and cooking it). Luckily, now that we have A Better Treat, and therefore always have Chicken Breast dog treats at home, I can eliminate the last minute grocery runs and the cooking time! A definite win for a working mom! Now, we just need to find a solution to mom's sleep deprivation during upset stomach nights.
